Members of USITT are automatically members of OISTAT, the International Organization of Scenographers, Theatre Architects, and Technicians, and should be interested in the fantastic programs planned for World Stage Design 2013 September 5 to 11 in Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom.

Design for Temporal Sustainable Theatre

A competition to design a temporal, sustainable theatre will be part of WSD’13. The competition is open to individuals or groups of individuals. Companies are not allowed to enter. Inspired by the cardboard box theatre employed during the 2007 Prague Quadrennial, this competition challenges entrants to submit a design for a 100 to 150-seat theatre space built from low-resource materials with an eye toward sustainability and conservation of the environment. Ten finalists will be exhibited at WSD’13. Of those ten, one design will be selected to actually be constructed in the Anthony Hopkins Centre at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.

March 1 is the dead for submissions. More information is available here.

Scenofest

Companies and artists from the around the world are invited to bring performances to Scenofest as part of World Stage Design 2013 (WSD’13) September 5 to 11 in Cardiff, Wales.

Applications are encouraged from a broad range of work, and may include collective or solo shows, live art and installation, public participation pieces, and everything in between. Practitioners at every stage in their careers – from students to established artists – are welcome to participate. Applications are now open; for further details go here. The deadline for the second round of applications is March 15.

Companies and artists selected to perform will be able to present their work to both United Kingdom and international audience members in one of the most exciting international performance events taking place in the UK next year.  The festival will host the selected events at various performance venues in and around the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.  This includes a sustainable theatre venue built for the event, traditional theatre spaces including the Richard Burton Theatre and the Dora Stoutzker Concert Hall, and site-specific spaces in and around Cardiff.

WSD’13 Exhibition

The WSD’13 Exhibition is a curated and juried showcase of performance design work as well as interactive lighting, sound, and video displays. One hundred works selected by an international panel will be on display; however, all applicants will have their work displayed in the online design gallery. Performances produced any time between March 15, 2009 and March 15, 2013 are eligible. Submissions will be accepted online through March 15 at www.wsd2013.com.

During all these events at WSD, OISTAT will hold meetings and other activities to plan future activities and events around the world as part of the OISTAT World Congress. OISTAT members are invited to attend these as well.
