Southern California: Slates Sixth Career Fair

The sixth Annual Career Fair and Student Design Competition will be held
January 26 at the California State University Los Angeles campus by the Southern California Regional Section. Admission is free to attendees.

The Student Competition is open to all areas of design, tech production, and stage management. Winners may receive a free student registration pass to attend the USITT Conference & Stage Expo in Milwaukee, March 20 to 23.

Students also will have the opportunity for portfolio reviews by professionals in their area of interest, to attend seminars and workshops, and to apply for summer internship and hiring opportunities. PCPA in Santa Maria will be actively recruiting for both its summer company and training program. Vendor tables include Rose Brand and Rosco.

Tour the Luckman Theatre and experience the wonderful teaching and performance facilities the department has to offer.

Display tables at the Career Fair Expo are $30 each for vendors, employers, and academic programs. There will be a brief section membership meeting at 9:30 am.

Southeast: Changes to Southeast Leadership

The offices of Chair and Vice-Chair for Relations have changed in the Southeast Regional Section. Chip Haas is the new Chair, and Stacey Galloway is now VC Relations.  David Wheeler is now the Immediate Past Chair.

The hand-off occurred during the section’s Master Classes held in October at Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

Upstate New York: Upstate New York Workshops and Job Fair

Upstate New York Regional Section’s Winter Job Fair and Workshop day February 2, 2013 will be based at Cazenovia College in Cazenovia, New York. Planners hope that the more central location will prove to be easier to attend.

Schedule: 8:30 to 9 a.m. Students and Regional Members arrive: Coffee and Doughnuts are available in a meet and mingle area. Theatre tours will be held.

The day will start at 8:30 a.m. with students setting up URTA /Young Designer style presentations.

Resumes will be collected between 8:30 and 9:20 a.m. From 9 to 9:15 am theater representatives will talk about what they are looking for in the interviews. From 2 to 6 p.m. interviews will be held and the the Design Presentation room will be available for general viewing

Other morning activities include a workshop on make-up and special techniques for character face painting and a tour of the JR Clancy manufacturing facility in Syracuse, with carpooling to the Clancy site. The Lighting Demo and try-out room will be open from 9:15 to 1 p.m.

After lunch, the Upstate NY Section meeting will start at 1 p.m.

Afternoon activities include interviews, viewing displays in the Design Presentation room, and workshops including Understanding Pixels, rasters, and resolutions; a Section Officers Meeting; Teaching Technology: Tips and tricks to keeping up to date with the ever-changing technology; and a prop demo.

Desert State: 2013 Desert State Annual Meeting

The Desert State Regional Section Annual Meeting will be Monday, January 21, Martin Luther King Day, at Xavier College Preparatory, 4710 North Fifth St., Phoenix, Arizona. Registration and breakfast will begin at 9 a.m.

The business meeting will begin at 10 a.m. Keynote speaker is Peter Monahan from Rose Brand Theatrical Fabrics, Fabrications, and supplies. Workshops this year will include: Working in Steel, Photographing your Show, Video on Stage, The World of the Microphone, Interviewing: What you should know, Dealing with Difficult People, Costume Distressing, and LEDs and Green Theatre.

During the afternoon the panelists from the interview workshop will be conducting practice interview and critique sessions. Participants will be able to sign up for 20-minute slots – time for a 10 to 15 minute interview followed by a brief critique. Participants in these sessions may attend workshops happening at the same time, it is simply requested that you leave and reenter quietly.

Breakfast will be provided and lunch is sponsored by Clearwing.
