Input Needed for 2008
NEC Revisions
Mitch Hefter
Standards Committee
The USITT Engineering Commission's 2008 National Electrical Code Committee is starting the tri-annual revision process. This will lead to the creation of the 2008 edition of the National Electrical Code, NEC®. The committee will function nationally and will form as many local task groups as there is interest for.
The NEC revision process begins with the general public submitting proposals to revise the code. Proposals for the 2008 edition will be due on November 1, 2005. In January of 2006, the various Code Panels will meet to consider and comment on the proposals. Comments will be published in a book available free to the public called a Report on Proposals (This can be requested from the National Fire Protection Association, NFPA.).
The public will have until October 31, 2006, to comment on the Code Panels' decisions. The Code Panels meet again in December 2006 to consider the public comments which will result in a publication called a Report on Comments.
All proposed changes are then voted on by the membership of the NFPA at its annual meeting that year. The 2008 edition of the NEC® will become available in the fall of 2007.
Please become involved by either:
1) Filling out and returning a USITT 2008 National Electrical Code Committee application form to the address listed below or
2) Making proposals for changes to the 2008 National Electrical Code. You can obtain this information from the NFPA web site (follow the links for Codes and Standards). You can also do this through USITT as in item 1.
Members of the Committee will receive all mailings and be able to vote on the USITT-sponsored proposed changes. Also, they will be invited to participate in the comment process.
Chair of the USITT Engineering Commission's 2008 National Electrical Code Committee is Ken Vannice, who can be reached through e-mail or at Leviton / NSI / Colortran, 20497 SW Teton Ave., Tualatin, OR 97062; phone 503-404-5563; or fax 503-404-5663.
