Student International Travel Award Deadline Set

Students — looking for support to attend the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space? Have an international research project you would like to investigate while there? The USITT Student International Travel Award offers biennial support to students seeking funding for theatre design, technology, and research related international travel. The award amount of $1,000, is supported by the Samuel H. Scripps International Fund, and is made available through the USITT International Committee.

Eligible projects may be developed from a wide variety of theatre topics, and priority will be given to PQ-based projects this year. The next round of applications, due on December 8, will be for the award period of March 2011to March 2012. One award winner will be selected and the award will be presented at the Annual Conference & Stage Expo in Charlotte, North Carolina in March.

Students who are current USITT members with Junior/Senior or Graduate standing are encouraged to apply. The application is available online here. In addition to the application form, applicants are asked to compose a project narrative (500 word maximum) describing your project, where you are going, planned timetable, budget, and what you hope to accomplish while overseas. Your application should include a letter of recommendation from a current teacher, your resume, and, for design related applications, 10 images of your recent work. Refer questions to Alexandra Bonds at abonds@uoregon.edu.

Seek Applicants for Architecture Open Lab

The Architecture Section of the 2011 Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space, asking “what is a theatre now and what could it be next?” will include an open laboratory where selected participants will collaborate and work with renowned international experts in theatre architecture, theory, and design to propose alternative models for citing performance. Theatre will no longer be considered art form or built form but a social, cultural, and political venture; no longer a single receptacle of performance, but a civic meeting place that addresses local and global realities.

Deadline for applications is October 31. Announcement of selection will be November 30. Applicants must be Ph.D. students or emerging practitioners. Selected candidates must be present during the entire workshop (June 16 to 26). The workshop fee is covered by the PQ, Travel or accommodation costs or per diems are covered by candidates.
