2011 Architecture Winners Named

Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theatre will receive the only Honor Award to be given as part of the 2011 USITT Architecture Awards program. Four outstanding new or renovated performance spaces will receive Merit Awards as part of the recognition program.

Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theatre, in Washington, DC opened in October after more than 10 years of planning and more than two years of construction. It has been widely acclaimed.

Adjucators for the 2011 USITT Architecture Awards met in January to review the 27 nominated spaces from five countries before choosing the winners. On the panel were architect Norman Pfeiffer, FAIA; theatre consultant Joshua Dachs; and acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota.

The awards will be presented at a special session as part of the 2011 USITT Annual Conference & Stage Expo in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Architecture Award Review and Presentation will be held from 2:30 to 4 p.m., Friday, March 11 followed by a reception from 5 to 10 p.m. Both sessions will be at the Stage Door Theatre at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, North College Street at 5th Street. The space was designed by Cesar Pelli, the 2011 USITT Distinguished Achievement in Architecture award winner.
