News From David Grindle, USITT Executive Director
Unveil the Strength that Is USITT
What a year it has been!!!!
Last July I wrote in Sightlines for the first time and talked about USITT being about the members. Over the year that I've been in the position of Executive Director, I have come to find that our Institute is a more diverse and interesting collection of people than I had ever imagined. We have something to celebrate and, true to the nature of most of our members, we still don't like to draw attention to ourselves. Garrison Keillor would say that is a very Minnesotan attitude to have, and from many of our members in that part of the world, he's right.
One of the great joys of this job is talking to people who are not members of USITT and telling the story of who we are and what we do. The awe on their faces when I tell the stories of our members, both individual and organizational, is a great image. Our world is a hidden gem of talent, business success, and caring. Those stories are incredible to share and tell to the rest of the world.
Other non-profit executives often say to me, "I've heard of USITT, but I don't know what it does." When they hear, they too are in awe that we do all that we do. They can't believe the volunteer spirit in the organization and the willingness of our members to help both the Institute and each other. Frequently I hear how they wish they could get such commitment from their members. It's nice to smile and say that it is part of our heritage and deeply ingrained in the sense of duty among the members.
In the coming year, renewal notices will come to you via e-mail and postal service. When you renew, you will receive a USITT Member window cling for your office, car, or glass surface of your choice. I encourage you to display it in a place where it can be easily seen and shared with others. Let people know you are a member of a great organization that cares for its members and its industry. Share your stories of the connections you've made through the Institute and the things you've learned. That continues to rate the highest among the things our members value the most.
Last summer I encouraged you to share your successes with us so we can share them with the membership as a whole. Some of you took us up on it, and we were excited to share the news. Again, you are encouraged to let us know about you and your work. It is through sharing news and celebrating our members that we keep that focus firmly on those who matter the most, U, the start of USITT.
Have a great summer wherever you are.
We'd like to hear your comments on this story.
